Small business marketers and SEOs love to tell you to create “high-quality, unique, and interesting content” so you will rank well in search engine results. There are many reasons we give this somewhat vague advice, not the least of which is that we really do not know what else to say‚Äö√Ñ√Æsearch engines are not exactly forthcoming about how websites are ranked. One thing is absolutely clear, though. Social sharing is important. Once you have great content that people want to share, you need to make it easy for them do so.
If you make it easy for people to share you content, they will. Both Google and Bing use social signals in ranking their search engine results. There have been many studies that show your search engine results rank will increase with the more shares you have on social networks. At a minimum, your small business should have Facebook and Twitter sharing capability (Twitter especially plays a strong role in search engine results). I would also suggest Google Plus. This helps you website get indexed quicker‚Äö√Ñ√Æsomething that is helpful for small businesses‚Äö√Ñ√Æand it would be foolish to think that Google does not show some favoritism to its own social network.
Once those three social networks are covered, it really depends on your small business and your audience as to where you can expect social sharing to occur. For some small businesses, LinkedIn is a priority. For others, it may be Pinterest. If you know that a lot of your customers or prospects spend their time on a particular social network, then you want to include that network in your social sharing capabilities on your website.

Of course, if you are not using WordPress then you will need to add the ability to share to your website manually. Fortunately, social networks make this fairly easy with some simple tools that create the buttons and code you need. Giving your visitors the ability to share you content will lead to greater sharing of your content, help other people find your content, and improve your visitor engagement. Even more, search engines will pick up on the social sharing of you content and rank your pages higher in their search engine results. Make it easy for people to share and they will.
